Vitamin D and Covid

Covid infections and the limitations it has imposed on quality of life for all ages over the past two years are of great concern to everyone.
We’ve been dealing with a pandemic for a long time now.  Did you know that having adequate Vitamin D is an important guard against viral infection? It plays a role in boosting the immune system and even aiding in recovery from Covid-19.  Note: I am not in any way trying to influence anyone’s decision on the vaccines - that is, or should be, a personal choice made by every person, based upon their circumstances.  Regardless of our personal vaccine choices we each have a responsibility to stay home when ill, wash hands frequently ,and maintain social distancing and probably mark when in public. Those methods made a tremendous difference in pre-covid days.

I recently viewed the DaVinci Online International Conference on Covid - 19 and Vitamin D, sponsored by Optimum Health Research in Europe. The focus was on the role of Vitamin D. Here are some of the findings from Spanish Researchers:

Over 80 percent of 200 COVID-19 patients in a hospital in Spain have vitamin D deficiency, according to a new study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
In March 2021 Vitamin D ‘necessary’ for COVID-19 treatment
Vitamin D supplementation should be a standardised practice to treat COVID-19 in hospitalised older patients, according to a newly published position statement by the Spanish Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology.
William Hogan, Ph.D., a presenter at the conference had this recommendation “To reduce the risk of infection, it is recommended that people at risk of influenza and/or COVID-19 consider taking 10,000 IU/d of vitamin D3 for a few weeks to rapidly raise 25(OH)D concentrations, followed by 5000 IU/d. The goal should be to raise 25(OH)D concentrations above 40-60 ng/mL (100-150 nmol/L). For treatment of people who become infected with COVID-19, higher vitamin D3 doses might be useful. Randomized controlled trials and large population studies are underway in a large scale: https://c19vitamind.com/.”

Atsuo Yanagisawa, M.D., Ph.D.President, International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine  delivered the closing remarks.  He stated: In January 26, 2020, the International Society for Orthomolecular Medicine (ISOM) recommends nutrients of vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, selenium and magnesium to prevent or minimize symptoms for Covid-19 infection. These recommendations are very early phase in the pandemic. These recommendations have proven to be correct by subsequent research.

William Grant PhD Epidemiologist in San Francisco states:  To reduce the risk of infection, it is recommended that people at risk of influenza and/or COVID-19 consider taking 10,000 IU/d of vitamin D3 for a few weeks to rapidly raise 25(OH)D concentrations, followed by 5000 IU/d. The goal should be to raise 25(OH)D concentrations above 40-60 ng/mL (100-150 nmol/L). For treatment of people who become infected with COVID-19, higher vitamin D3 doses might be useful.

Calculate your Current D Level

Knowing your Vitamin D level and getting it to an adequate level,  it turns out, can literally save your life when it comes to Covid.  In the US alone, some 42% of the adult population is Vitamin D deficient. The only way you can reliably correct this deficiency is by having a simple blood test and from the results calculate the amount of D you need to take daily to achieve an acceptable level.
